For anyone who is serious about their golf, having custom fitted golf
equipment is a must. There are so many variables in the golf swing,
things that can and do go wrong. So by having your golf equipment custom
fitted, you are removing some of the factors which can lead to poor
performance on the golf course.
In this article I'm going to look
at some of the options you have in getting access to custom golf
equipment. Many people assume it's going to be an expensive process but I
am going to show you a way that you can get this custom equipment at a
relatively cheap price.
What You Need To Know Before Buying Custom Golf Equipment
Before
looking to get equipment custom fitted, you are obviously going to need
to know what you specifications are. To do this, your best option is to
get your swing analysed by a pro, who may also use a launch monitor.
This
is going to give you the information you need to take to your club
maker so they can put together a set that is going to be matched to your
swing.
Custom Golf Equipment - OEM Manufacturers
For
those of you who don't know, OEM stands for Original Equipment
Manufacturer, and in the golf world refers to the brand name
manufacturers who produce ready-made equipment - Titleist, Callaway etc.
Because
this equipment comes ready-made, there is a limit on the customisation
that can occur before your purchase. As a general rule, features that
you can may be able to select before you purchase can include: shaft
flex, shaft length and the grip, as well as loft on your driver.
You
are not going to be able to have such things as lie and loft adjusted,
until after you have purchased, and this is then going to cost you
additional money. Having the equipment custom fitted after it has been
purchased will still see good results, but can never be as good as
having the entire club/set built with your needs in mind.
Custom Golf Equipment - Component Manufacturers
As
the name suggests, a component manufacturer takes the individual
components of the golf club -the shaft, head and grip - and puts them
together themselves. This differs from the OEM's who have theirs put
together in factories.
Shaft Consistency
Without going in
to too much technical detail, shafts will perform slightly differently
depending on how they are inserted within the hosel. This can lead to
inconsistencies in performance amongst clubs of the same set.
If you've ever had an iron in a set that you always struggled to hit, this could be the reason.
The
club maker uses technologies that allow them to align the spines of the
set to ensure that the performance is consistent across the entire set.
This is one of the major benefits of buying your equipment from a
component manufacturer.
For Further Information
If you
would like to learn more about this there are two main techniques - do a
Google search on spine aligning, and PUREing and you should get plenty
of information.
Again with an OEM set, you can have the shafts removed and re-adjusted, but this is going to cost you extra money.
Lie & Loft
When
the component manufacturer is putting together your equipment they are
able to create the exact lie and loft that you specify based on
discussions with the club maker and your pro.
So what you end up
with is a set that was put together by a professional club maker (as
opposed to a factory hand), with your exact needs in mind. And the best
part of all this is that the equipment is going to cost you a fraction
of what you would pay for that big brand stuff.
So for me it is a
no-brainer. Many people will argue that the performance characteristics
of the components used will not be as good as OEM equipment.
They
may be right - but talk to any pro and they will tell you that the
shaft is the most important part of the club. You have many more shaft
options with a component guy, and they will ensure the shafts are
consistently inserted.
Again you can have the stock shaft from
the OEM equipment removed, buy some upgraded shafts and have them spine
aligned, but if you are on a budget this is going to bust it - and the
extra performance you may get out of the club it is not really
commensurate with the price.
So if you are looking for custom
golf equipment at an affordable price, the component manufacturers are
going to be your best option. You will get hand crafted clubs, made with
components of high quality, and you are going to save yourself a bundle
of cash in the process. Happy days.
